DIGITAL VOICE - COMING TO A PHONE NEAR YOU By the end of 2026 all current landlines will move from an analogue system to a digital one. Your provider will contact you well in advance to let you know when your phone line will be moved to digital but if you would like to be ahead of the game this link will give you more information and links to other information sources.
MOBILE PHONE CHANGE
If you have an old mobile it may use the 3G network. This is being switched off by early this year (2026) which means it will no longer be able to access mobile data and you will need to buy a more modern mobile to continue doing this. You will still be able to make phone calls as they use the 2G network which will remain for now, but can only handle the most basic tasks. Note that if you plan to use your old phone abroad, the country may have already closed their older networks. Follow this link to the Ofcom website for more information.
GROUPS THAT HAVE CLOSED Please note that the IT Pop-up group has been dissolved.
Please also note that German Conversation has closed due to lack of sufficient members.
ONLINE SAFETY
Buckinghamshire and Surrey have produced a useful guide to online safety which you can view from this link.
THE SHED This is now available weekly on Mondays at the Addlestone Centre starting at 10.00. to 12:00. The charge for the session is £4.00 which includes a coffee and tea. This is provided through the Addlestone Community Centre and has several U3A members but is not a Runnymede U3A group as such.
The Shed is well equipped with tools etc and we have a supervisor, Graham Mudd. There is Public Liability Insurance so you will be covered for any injury if they occurred.
Members can bring in items they want to repair or make something on the day. The shed has some wood stocks.
Anyone who is interested in taking part should contact Lawrence Cox.
PROSPECTIVE NEW GROUPS Expressions of interest are requested for the following proposed groups:
Yoga (gentle class)
The numbers for this class would be limited, and an additional cost of approx £5 would be charged towards the payment of a teacher. If you are interested in this group, please also state which area you would be prepared to travel to (eg. Addlestone, Ottershaw, New Haw, Chertsey.)
Singing for Fun
If you enjoy singing, but don't want to join a choir, then this could be the group for you. Are you someone who could run the group? - ie. be willing to choose songs, print out the lyrics and access music for the songs.
Tai Chi
A gentle form of exercise and great for balance. Again this group would incur an additional charge, as yet unknown, towards the cost of a teacher.
Please pass this information on to members who do not receive emails; their replies could be sent to me via a group leader or friend.
I look forward to receiving your replies, please make sure you specify which group(s) you are interested in.
If there is enough interest and we are able to secure teachers etc, I will contact you again with possible days, times/venues/costs.
