Welcome to Social History
Social history is often described as the history of the people, concentrating upon the social, economic and cultural institutions.
We offer a variety of diverse topics from different speakers over the course of the year.
Our meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday afternoon of the month from 2-4 pm. starting January to May then a summer break and recommencing again in September through to November. Our December meeting is traditionally our Xmas lunch celebration.
We are a sociable group and following the presentation, there is an opportunity to meet and chat over a cup of tea.
We look forward to welcoming you to the group.
Joyce and Carol
**Please Note - our meetings are only available to group members except by prior agreement with the group leader**

NOSTALGIA CORNER
Antony Wood came to talk to us in January about ‘A Social History of our Lost World – growing up in the second half of the 20th Century.
Having led us into the subject with some examples of processes and implements no longer used, he divided the room into six different groups, with eight or nine per group. Each group had to choose a subject to discuss from a list provided. Those chosen were Holidays, School, Entertainment, Family Christmas, Food and Travel. The period discussed ranged from 1946 until about 1970. The groups then spent about 20 minutes discussing their memories on the subject and making notes before the spokesperson for each group was called upon to summarise their discussion for the benefit of the rest of the meeting.
The whole exercise was a foray into memories of growing up in different eras and the nostalgia it brought along the way.
With all that information to hand it seemed a shame not to capture it for a wider audience, so those interested can read each of the summaries by clicking on the links above.
